This splendid instrument, with its beautifully vocal treble and powerful bass will be used for several new recordings on the Musica Omnia label. First will be a complete recording of the harpsichord music of Henry Purcell, the great English composer, who was equally adept at composing in the Italian and French styles. In addition to the eight harpsichord suites, the recording will include all of Purcell's surviving music drawn from his works for the theatre. A second CD is planned, a recital with soprano Sherezade Panthaki and Peter Watchorn of Italian works for soprano and harpsichord.
Les Sirénes performs at Trinity
Les Sirénes is Kathryn Mueller, soprano, Kristen Watson, soprano, Cora Swenson, baroque cello, and Michael Sponseller, harpsichord. The group takes audiences on an exploration of the soprano voice and the Baroque repertory, engaging listeners with crisp and dynamic music-making, sparkling coloratura, and lavish suspensions. This performance includes Trinity's recently acquired Zuckermann Moermans harpsichord. Note that the following video is Adobe Flash-based, snd therefore will not play back on iPhone or iPad devices.
Peter Watchorn
Harpsichordist Peter Watchorn continues his survey of Bach's complete music for solo keyboard with this exquisite recording of Bach's six French Suites, like the English Suites provided with a mysterious and not entirely accurate title. The most tuneful and approachable of Bach's great sets of keyboard suites, the French Suites are presented here in their entirety, with all repeats, ornamented in the Baroque style. They are played on a new brass-strung two-manual harpsichord by Zuckermann Harpsichords International, for which Peter Watchorn serves as chief tonal advisor. It is patterned after a surviving original harpsichord from 1738 by Christian Vater, and represents exactly the type of instrument for which the French Suites were written in the 1720s.
