The "Troubadour" Virginal Harpsichord
Professional harpsichordists have often inquired about a small harpsichord, something that could be handled by one person and easily transported to continuo and accompanying engagements. It would have to have a big sound, one that could cut through a small orchestra or ensemble; and it had to be stable, so that frequent tuning wasn't required. Such an instrument would not only serve the professional, but also those who are looking for a relatively small instrument for home use. So we designed the "Troubadour" virginal for the working musician as well as for those who want a small harpsichord with a big sound.
Contrary to current fashion, the "Troubadour" wasn't designed "after" any particular antique, although we did study a whole range of southern European virginals. The "Troubadour" is lightly built, but strong enough so that it doesn't require an outer case. The exterior is a simple, naturally finished maple enlivened by cherry case moldings (a painting kit is available if you wish to decorate your virginal with color).
The "Troubadour" virginal is offered in various stages of completion and features precision-cut parts, all hardware, specialty tools and detailed instructions.
