Richard Auber
President
Mr. Auber’s journey into the world of harpsichords began with his love for music, particularly the works of Bach, which he played on a modern flute. The desire to authentically recreate baroque music inspired Auber to build his first harpsichord while still in college. The instrument was a Zuckermann harpsichord kit, which sparked both a deep appreciation for woodworking and a passion for early music.
Study Overseas
After studying harpsichord building on a prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, following David Way’s command to “study antique harpsichords in Europe”, Richard was dispatched to the shop of Marc Ducornet in Paris as an apprentice. Auber returned to the United States, and eventually became the third owner of Zuckermann Harpsichords International, which has grown to become the largest harpsichord maker in the U.S., known for its harpsichord and clavichord kits and parts.
Lead the team
Under Auber's leadership, the company has maintained its heritage of craftsmanship while continuing to innovate. He has assembled a team of dedicated professionals, many of whom have decades of experience in harpsichord building. The company not only builds instruments but also repairs and restores historic ones, including instruments from Zuckermann’s early years.
Dedicate to Education
With a focus on passing on knowledge, Auber’s internship program trains the next generation of harpsichord builders. His dedication to early music and craftsmanship is matched by his commitment to preserving and restoring Zuckermann harpsichords, ensuring their continued use and enjoyment for future generations.
Music as lifestyle
In addition to running the business, Auber has rekindled his love for playing the flute and harpsichord, performing Bach’s timeless melodies, which he finds deeply spiritual and moving. His personal journey, from aspiring lawyer to master craftsman, is a testament to his passion for music and dedication to keeping the harpsichord tradition alive.
